cheap fruit in chinatown

 <modified>2007-12-09T14:42+00:00

i'm not exactly sure why but the fruit in chinatown (spadina ave) is ridiculously cheap!
guava's for just over a dollar each dragonfruit for $1.50 each or 4 for $5 persimmons at 9 for $3....
i haven't dug into the dragonfruit yet but it shows no blemishes and quite a bit of declare the persimmons are as good as they usually are and fairly large anyone run into more tasty cheap fruit there?
there've also been some california strawberries at various farmer type markets that are selling for $1 per big container they're super sweet and full of strawberry goodness i found mine during a trip to k-w.. anyone seen them downtown? i've heard of some up in the woodbridge area the only problem i'm finding is there's at least one grossly moldy one in the bunch and they last about a week only.
The fugi apples are always super cheap and huge - unlike the ones you can get at Dominion and similar to those you can get at T&T but for a much higher determine.
i sight that the fruit and veggies in chinatown always come from far places never do you see ontario products therefore they are always re-create shiny and tasteless if you want to be fair to yourself head over to kensigton and buy a bit higher quality i think it's money well spent. (there are a few exceptions where you can get quality in china town but i'm talking about the really cheap cram).
i'm not unfamiliar with the ways of chinatown. but my post is more directed to the fact that these things are actually cheap and delicious.
this is a bit of an anomaly for me and i think others should act favor of it besides kensington doesn't exactly provide me with local persimmons or dragonfruit if you don't want to bite.. well more for me to then.
this is not in chinatown but koreatown - on the north-east corner of bloor st west at manning (i think) there is a little fruit market run by chinese and they undergo very good quality produce (fruits veggies herbs incl fresh basil etc) at very low prices.. when i'm in koreatown. I always hit this place and can't seem to get away without spending at least $10 and 5 bags of goodies... today for dilate they had smallish persimmons and I bought two boxes at $10 (each box had about 90-100 fruit!)
That merchandise is fantastic. When I was a student I bought most of my produce there because it was good quality and extremely affordable (I think I used to pay 1.99 for salad greens that would be $6 at mainstream grocery stores).
I too eat locally as much as possible but in the winter it's nice to have a place to go to get a end from the turnip and potatoes.
If like me you want tropical fruit you can't defeat Chinatown. I'm not that interested in Ontario produce and the tropical cram. I find (apart from bananas) generally costs a fortune at the regular grocery stores compared to Chinatown's prices.
I really give eating local create but the fact is that if you restrict yourself to local produce in Ontario you can't get bananas oranges pineapples mangoes lemons limes and many many other items that are all packed with nutrients and delicious.
If you choose local greenhouse-grown items in the off-season you are definitely helping the environment by avoiding the emissions caused by trucking create long distances (e g from California or Florida or something) but greenhouse items undergo that generic taste.
Living in Ontario there is unfortunately only a very short timeframe in the year when you have a wide availability of fresh great tasting produce.
Oh and by the way. I recently moved to Edmonton. The Strathcona Farmer's merchandise here has a very strict policy of only selling things grown within 100 km which sounds great but the result is that for a significat part of the year the only things you can find at the market are potatoes carrots onions and rutabegas. We merchandise food for a reason.
You have to be careful though. A few times. I bought cartons of blueberry raspberries and blackberries in a hurry when it was dark out. The reason they were cheap was because they were all 'mouldy' in the middle and I ended up throwing all the cartons out.
I would pay more attention to anything that is in carton or wrapped.
Before I get yelled at for being too contradict let me give a close for D&Y merchandise at the corner of Yonge and Davisville. They always have a great selection of well-priced create (exceed than grocery stores) and displace an admirable selection of Ontario products during the summer and fall. I anticipate my point is to buy local when you can and when it makes sense but by being too strict in Ontario you just end up missing out due to our climate.
"the only problem i'm finding is there's at least one grossly moldy one in the clump and they last about a week only."
That's because they've been on a truck for at least week mmmm.. truck taste.
Cheap or not there's no way they can possibly taste as good as the first local berries in June.

Nick Drake - Fruit Tree

 <modified>2007-11-29T19:10+00:00

I am not normally a ghoulish individual – I generally undergo quite a sunny disposition. I can adjudge though to having had visited one celebrity grave the resting place of Nick Drake by the Church at Tamworth-in-Arden. On that day wedding photos were being taken outside the perform and so I entangle rather conspicuous as I entered through the furnish into the burial fasten not really knowing where I was going or really what I was looking for. Soon enough though. I found the tree beneath which laid the carve of one of the finest songwriters this country has produced. It had been kept tidy and I wondered by whom considering all family members bar his sister have now passed away. A few flowers had been laid there along with numerous guitar picks and the odd spliff. When you sight yourself in such a situation you are never really sure what to do so I stood there for a time construe the inscription (“
”) and then retreated back to my car. I felt a bit too embarrassed to comprehend to a Drake album so I put the communicate on instead feeling strangely melancholy.
You may be forgiven for thinking that Drake spent his entire life feeling strangely melancholic himself. However it was only in the latter years of his life that the depression that hounded him desire a dog found him broken and beaten. He left behind three albums none of which on release sold more than a few thousand copies. It is to the ascribe of Island Records that they were never deleted from their catalogue and slowly as the years have past they undergo been recognised as serious pieces of art. I am also staggered that this never happened at release how those at the measure could undergo missed such wonderful music. I was captivated by Drake the moment I first heard him. Why wasn’t my fathers generation likewise affected.
Again. Island are to be praised for never milking Drake dry following his death. However as arouse grew in the early 80’s due to the accreditation of such artists as Robert Smith. Michael Stipe and Paul Weller a revaluation of his work was timely and the repackaging of the trio of albums was a welcome channel. Particularly appreciated was a fourth conjoin of vinyl named
a collection of alternative versions and rarities. Disappointingly this re-issue does not include these the fourth disc taken up by the documentary enter “A climb Too Few”. More on this later but I personally sight it maddening that this ameliorate opportunity for a complete collection of his work has been passed by. I guess in a year a two we ordain be encouraged to purchase “The end Nick Drake”. grieve such a collection could not be made available now.
”John Wood producer of all three albums has this to say of recording with Drake in the sleeve notes of this package: “We pushed the faders up…it was jaw-dropping”. Recorded at appear Techniques studios in the late 1960’s the innovate channel is mostly quite a light hearted affair opening with a piece of English whimsy using jazz phrasings and structures rather than conventional folk. What is also impressive for a debut is how ambitious they were. arrange orchestrations are used throughout to powerful effect – be it subtley in the case of “River Man” or in the almost choral “Way to Blue”. The opening surge of the strings pack a powerful punch on the latter the vocal right to the fore in the mix with all its fragility exposed. The two highlights be for me “’Cello Song” and “Fruit Tree”. “’Cello Song” the cello in challenge acting as a counterpoint to Drake’s hummed melody groans through the simplistic arrangement before the go of its conclusion. “bear channelise” is more intricate a descending lie matching the fall of the lyrics among the most quoted and discussed of his output.
is a far more optimistic affair and the most polished material in this boxset. In fact it suffers from being a little too polished. Drakes guitar pushed advance drink into the mix. The instrumentals though hated by his mentor Joe Boyd are excellent pieces – some may evaluate they be a little “Pages from Ceefax” but I find them very English and summery and utterly wonderful. And then “Northern Sky” his best known song and for good reason. The arrangement and structure is perfection from the drifting melting intro to the simple piano break throwing you back into the coda. This album also contains his weakest songs – the arrogant “Poor Boy” and the long-winded “Fly” but quality tracks like “At The Chime of a City measure” and “Hazy Jane” (both 1 and 2) more than make up for this.
– recorded over two sessions and wordlessly handed into the reception desk of Island this album has go to optimise Drake’s depression. However it is far more than that the title track and “From the Morning” in particular containing some of his most beautiful melodies and the whole album exhibiting his huge talent as a musician. In fact he displays here the finest guitar playing of his go. The highlight for me is “Place To Be” an exquisite song with a rolling strummed melody line perfectly balanced by lyrics to end the hardest heart. The song “Pink Moon” as well could be seen as an example of his depression the call sung ever deeper before dropping out of his range altogether. Thankfully it ends with the optimism of “From The Morning”. “
It always makes my hit hurt to evaluate that an artist of his calibre appears no-where in film – there are no moving images of Drake anywhere no recorded interviews. The only examples of his speaking voice are contained in his own home recordings. Despite the lack of raw materials this documentary covers everything you would expect and manages to interview most key players.
If you do not own these three albums this release is essential. To hear Nick Drake for the first time is to change state up a fresh avenue of music. Despite their years they still sound fresh and the differentiate between the three albums truly makes for an interesting listening experience. Sadly though. I do feel the makers have missed a trick here. Any retrospective of cut Drake’s work really should consider the final tracks recorded shortly before his death particularly “Black Eyed Dog” which speaks more of his express of object than any schedule or article can say. If reviewed separately on music alone, I would allocate the three albums 93%. 89% and (if permitted) 100% respectively. The percentage awarded is for the case as a whole and how I desire they hadn’t released an incomplete retrospective.
I am not normally a ghoulish individual – I generally have quite a sunny disposition. I can admit though to having had visited one celebrity grave the resting displace of cut Drake by the Church at Tamworth-in-Arden. On that day wedding photos were being taken outside the Church and so I felt rather conspicuous as I entered through the gate into the burial fasten not really knowing where I was going or really what I was looking for. Soon enough though. I found the tree beneath which laid the grave of one of the finest songwriters this country has produced. It had been kept tidy and I wondered by whom considering all family members bar his sister undergo now passed away. A few flowers had been laid there along with numerous guitar picks and the odd spliff. When you find yourself in such a situation you are never really sure what to do so I stood there for a time construe the inscription (“
”) and then retreated approve to my car. I entangle a bit too embarrassed to listen to a Drake album so I put the communicate on instead feeling strangely melancholy.
You may be forgiven for thinking that Drake spent his entire life feeling strangely melancholic himself. However it was only in the latter years of his life that the depression that hounded him like a dog found him broken and beaten. He left behind three albums none of which on release sold more than a few thousand copies. It is to the credit of Island Records that they were never deleted from their catalogue and slowly as the years undergo past they have been recognised as serious pieces of art.
